More About ScratchJr

ScratchJr is an introductory programming language that enables young children (ages 5 and up) to create their own interactive stories and games. Children snap together graphical programming blocks to make characters move, jump, dance, and sing. Children can modify characters in the paint editor, add their own voices and sounds, even insert photos of themselves -- then use the programming blocks to make their characters come to life.

ScratchJr is an engaging app developed to introduce young children, particularly those under the age of eight, to the world of coding. It draws inspiration from the well-known Scratch programming language, which has been widely embraced by older children and has contributed to a global movement in digital literacy. The creators of ScratchJr have meticulously crafted its interface and programming language to be accessible and suitable for the cognitive and emotional development stages of younger users.

The aim of ScratchJr is to establish coding as a fundamental form of literacy, akin to writing. Just as writing allows individuals to articulate thoughts and ideas, coding offers a new way for children to express themselves and understand the world around them. Previous perceptions of coding as a complex and daunting task are challenged by ScratchJr’s design, promoting the idea that everyone can engage in programming, much like they can with writing.

Through the use of ScratchJr, children are encouraged to not merely interact with technology but to create and construct with it. This hands-on experience fosters essential problem-solving skills and project design capabilities. Moreover, it instills the importance of sequencing, which is a critical skill for future academic achievements. The app also integrates math and language in a fun and relevant manner, thereby supporting early childhood numeracy and literacy development, demonstrating that coding can serve as an effective learning tool.

The development of ScratchJr is a collaborative effort involving the Developmental Technologies group at Tufts University and the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab, along with contributions from the Playful Invention Company. Two Sigma played a pivotal role in adapting the app for Android devices. The captivating graphics within the app were designed by HvingtQuatre Company and artist Sarah Thomson, ensuring an appealing visual experience.

ScratchJr is available as a free application, and users who appreciate its educational benefits are encouraged to support the Scratch Foundation through donations. This nonprofit organization is dedicated to providing ongoing assistance for ScratchJr and similar initiatives. It is important to note that this app is compatible only with tablets that are 7 inches or larger and operate on Android version 4.2 (Jelly Bean) or later, indicating a focus on accessibility within specific device parameters.
