More About GPSist

No ads, and no trackers - GPSTest displays real-time information for GNSS and SBAS satellites in view of your device. A vital open-source testing tool for platform engineers, developers, and power users, GPSTest can also assist in understanding why your GPS/GNSS isn't working.

This application supports dual-frequency Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), which enhances positioning accuracy by utilizing signals from multiple satellite systems simultaneously. It is compatible with a wide range of satellite constellations including GPS from the USA, Galileo from the European Union, GLONASS from Russia, QZSS from Japan, BeiDou or Compass from China, and IRNSS or NavIC from India. Additionally, it can work with various satellite-based augmentation systems such as SBAS, providing even more precise location data. However, using dual-frequency GNSS requires specific hardware support in the device and Android 8.0 Oreo or higher.

The core feature of the app, called "Accuracy," allows users to compare the device's estimated positional accuracy with the actual location they manually input. This feature is valuable for testing and validating GNSS performance, as most apps only show the estimated accuracy provided by the device. By manually entering the true location, users can better understand the accuracy limitations and improvements of their GNSS setup, making it a useful tool for developers, researchers, and advanced users.

The application offers a variety of menu options to assist with GNSS data management. Users can inject time data from Network Time Protocol (NTP) servers to improve fix accuracy or inject Predicted Satellite Data Service (PSDS) assistance data to aid satellite signal acquisition, provided their device supports this feature. There is also an option to clear all assistance data, which can be useful for troubleshooting or resetting the GNSS hardware. However, clearing assistance data may temporarily delay the device's ability to acquire a GPS fix, so it should be used with caution.

Customization options are available within the app, allowing users to change themes between light and dark modes, select map tile types, and configure automatic GPS start on device startup. Users can also set minimum time and distance intervals between location updates and choose whether to keep the screen on while using the app. The application is open-source, with beta versions accessible through Google Play, and it provides extensive documentation, FAQs, and community support through forums and GitHub repositories. Additional options include downloading older versions for devices without Google Play Services and installing via F-Droid for open-source enthusiasts.
